Uses for Foam in the Armed Forces – Part II

This is the second post in a two-part series on the uses for foam in the military and armed forces. For the first post in this series, visit: Uses for Foam in the Armed Forces – Part I

Another foam product present in the daily life of many service men and women is a camping pad. Utilized throughout the branches of the military, sleeping pads are one of the most important inclusions in the gear of military members. Given the stress and exertion service members endure, sleep is vital to their health and safety. The few hours a day that military members may be able to dedicate to sleep needs to be optimized, regardless of their environment. Foam sleeping pads insulate against the cold ground and provide cushion against hard and uneven surfaces, which can help maximize even a few hours of rest.

The Foam Factory manufactures closed-cell foam padding that insulates and cushions while remaining light enough to carry along with ease. Polyethylene roll foam and gymnastic rubber are both able to be cut as thin as 1/8 of an inch, in a more standard 3/8 of an inch thickness, or to any other thickness desired. These materials are moisture resistant, cleaned easily and can be rolled tightly, all important traits for service members on the move with heavy packs.

Just like their civilian counterparts, military bases and offices can require sound deadening to promote work efficiency and focus. The military also requires very high levels of security, making sound treatment a matter of great importance. Be it reducing reverberations and echoes in a noisy cafeteria or common area, or deadening sound in offices and meeting rooms, The Foam Factory has sound deadening materials that can be included in a building’s construction or applied to finished areas. Closed-cell polyethylene roll and neoprene foam sound treatment can be added in any thickness to the interior wall or floor construction for lightweight sound barriers that can reduce noise transmission. Acoustic open-cell foam drop ceiling tiles can also be factored into a room’s design as a sound insulator or added later if it is decided acoustic improvement is needed.

For spaces that have been repurposed for a use requiring sound deadening, or if it is decided that adding deadening would be beneficial, acoustical foam wall tiles in pyramid, wedge or eggcrate shapes can be added to reduce flutter, echoes and reverberation. These Class A fire retardant sound deadening panels are available in a broad selection of vibrant colors and sizes to fit perfectly within a room. In the same fire retardant acoustic soundproofing foam material, The Foam Factory also offers corner blocks, broadband absorbers, corner bass absorbers and studio columns for customized noise reduction in office or work spaces.

With military branches covering land, air and sea, nearly every type of mechanical product created has been or currently is being utilized by the military in some capacity, with many of the most innovative, powerful and specialized mechanisms existing solely for military use. Considering the immense number of products that require regular maintenance and repair, access to the right tools for the job is a priority. With polyethylene or cross-linked polyethylene foam (XLPE), The Foam Factory can manufacture custom inserts that securely store tools. Able to be individualized to any tool box or chest, both in terms of dimensions and contents, precision cuts are made to create snug fits around tools for organization and easy access. Any layout can be designed and with two-tone colored foam layers, missing tools will be obvious from the contrast of exposed, bright base layers against a dark top layer. The closed-cell foams The Foam Factory uses for this casing are moisture resistant and antimicrobial, so tools can be quickly used and replaced in a rush, even if dirty. These inserts are particularly useful for on-site repair kits, because they make it obvious when a tool has not been replaced, helping prevent lost tools, as well as preventing damage in transit with its snug fit.

Any materials that are used with the goal of increasing the safety, comfort and capabilities of enlisted men and women perform an important role, no matter how minor it may seem. This makes foam, in all of its styles and types, an incredibly valuable resource for the U.S. armed forces, no matter how it is used.
